Due date oriented planning

Until now, Rillsoft Project has only been asked for Capacity oriented planning and now from Version 7 Due date oriented planning is also available for you.

Capacity oriented planning to determine realistic delivery date

This variant is recommended if the available resources are sufficient and should not be overloaded. It is particularly interesting for the assessment of the duration and feasibility of the upcoming projects.

How it works – if assigned employees have nonworking days within activity duration, corresponding activities can be extended or postponed. Deadline targets are adjusted.

Example:

According to plan, Task 2 with assigned roles will be completed on 20.09.17

Employee Diligent has a nonworking day on 19.09.17

After the assignment of Mr. Diligent, Task 2 will be completed on 21.09.17

Advantages – Resources are never overloaded during automatic scheduling and a project plan is calculated by taking into account available resources.

Disadvantages – It can lead to extended activity duration and activities shifting due to nonworking days.

Due date oriented planning to meet promised delivery date

This variant is required if the activity and project deadlines are to be kept in any case. The resulting overload could be compensated either by increasing the processing capacity or by adjusting the efforts.

How it works – if assigned employees have nonworking days within activity duration, negative effort is calculated for a task, but the finish date of a task remains unchanged. A negative effort has a difference between an effort assigned to roles and the effort covered by employees with assigned role.

Example:

According to plan, Task 2 with assigned roles will be completed on 20.09.17

Employee Diligent has a nonworking day on 19.09.17

After the employee assignment, Task 2 will be completed on 20.09.17 as scheduled

However, Rillsoft Project calculates a negative effort in this case and allows another employee with the appropriate role to be employed as a substitute exactly on the absence day.

Employee usage in Task 2 in Resource view

Advantages –The task and as a result the project cut off dates are kept.

Disadvantages – It could lead to more resources, parallelization, or adjustment of function / performance targets.
